How to Handle Phone Scammers Using Deepfakes

10/27/2025

Phone scammers are increasingly using deepfake technology to clone voices and impersonate family members, coworkers, or company executives. These scams are designed to create urgency and trick you into making quick decisions. This guide outlines steps to recognize and handle deepfake phone scams.

1. Recognize the Threat

  • Scammers can make a voice sound almost exactly like someone you know.
  • They often pressure you with urgent requests (e.g., “Send money now!”).
  • Caller ID can be spoofed to look legitimate.

2. Personal Defense (Individuals & Families)

  • Always verify by calling the person back on their known number.
  • Use a family code word to confirm identity in emergencies.
  • Don’t trust caller ID — it can be faked.
  • Pause before acting on urgent requests.

3. What to Do If You Suspect a Deepfake Scam

1. Hang up immediately — do not engage.

2. Verify the request through a trusted, separate channel.

3. Report the attempt to:

  • Your phone carrier
  • The FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov)
  • Your IT/security team (if workplace related)

Bottom line: Treat unexpected calls — even from familiar voices — with caution. Verification through a trusted, separate channel is the best protection.
